During the 1940s, Carlton House Preparatory School at No 50 Great College Street was run by a Miss Swan and another two or three ladies. The school closed about 1950 or 1951 when Miss Swan retired but she continued to live there for some time after. (Nora Blake Swan 14th February 1879 to March 1970.) The attached photo was taken in 2018, the projecting windows were added along with the extension on the top floor when it was converted to flats. The school entrance was up the steps to the left of the building and if you look carefully you can see a mark on the wall to the right of the door where the ‘Carlton House Preparatory School’ nameboard used to be.
