I heard my first decent carol this morning on classic FM, sung by a choir and It brought back most enjoyable memories of carol singing as a young lad with one of my pals in the 1940’s. Our voices hadn’t broken so we must have been quite young and the two of us went round the posher areas where folks were more generous. We knew all the carols by heart and needed no hymn sheets – But to my shame we always collected money for ourselves! – Our needs in those days were probably a lot greater than the church so maybe it wasn’t too shameful, just enterprising.
