City of Brighton &Hove

by Pat Benham 18 July 2009

Since Brighton and Hove became a city I am wondering if that means we must never use the word ‘town’ to describe Brighton or Hove. It seems we have become rather PC in insisting on the use of “city” in every case. It is also a bit of a mouthful to say “I come from Brighton and Hove”. Likewise, is what used to be Brighton town centre now the ‘city centre’? I think not, as the centre of Brighton is not really the centre of both Brighton and Hove. Or is it? My view is that we can still say we are “going down the town” and that we come from either Brighton or Hove but not both. Yes?
