Clara Rosetta Cottage by Geoffrey Mead 25 October 2012Can anyone shed light on the house at the corner of Old Shoreham Rd and York Grove please? it has above the door Clara Rosetta Cottage 1862.3 replies Re: Clara Rosetta Cottage by Andy Grant 25 October 2012Hi Geoff, Oddly enough I’ve been in Brighton today undertaking research with Steve and just returned – still, I digress! The date of the house fits roughly with the development of York Grove, which was built at the start of the 1860’s. However, it looks as though the terrace of 9 houses on the eastern side was built first, in two stages. The property on the corner was certainly added by the 1870’s, but it appears that it was initially a shop in Old Shoreham Road, later numbered 13. The part of the building you refer to was possibly added during the 1870’s by a builder living at #9 by the name of John Winters. His wife was named Rosamond and perhaps the name was a derivative from this. This building became #10 but during the 1890’s it was called ‘Grove End’ and occupied by a man with the unfortunate name of Mr. McGrotty. Although I have established a reasonably consistent account of the history of this property, I have not found any direct reference to the name of the house, which leaves me a little sceptical as to the authenticity of the plaque. Regards, Andy Re: Clara Rosetta Cottage by Geoffrey Mead 26 October 2012Thanks Andy, the stone plaque looks pretty ‘authentic’ [although I realise that anyone can put any date on any building!].The dates you suggest do indeed fit in with the devt of the York Grove area,it was just the intriguing name that caught my attention.
