Clayton Tunnel Rail Crash

by Peter Barnard 4 October 2009

I recently discovered that the 2nd wife of my g.g.g.grandfather perished in the rail crash of 1861 in Clayton Tunnel and wondered just what the trains of that time looked like. Any railway enthustiasts who can point me in the right direction? Also family history experts can you explain why the bodies, which were initially taken to Hassocks before being returned to the Brighton Station Reading Room for identification had their deaths registered at Cuckfield.
