Craven Vale by Nick 10 June 2008I have recently moved to Craven Vale..does anyone know anything of it’s history and any links to any old photo’s of the area..many Thanks7 replies Re: Craven Vale by Andy Grant 11 June 2008Hi Nick, Although the Craven Vale estate was commenced from around 1900 onwards, the area within the triangle bounded by Freshfield Road, Dawson Terrace / Rochester Street and Whitehawk Hill Road largely consisted of allotments until-post war development took place. The area was ostensibly proposed as a development site in the 1930’s to provide housing for those displaced by the slum clearances around the Carlton Hill area. Craven Road and the area within the triangle was laid out and developed from the early 1950’s onwards. Regards Andy Re: Craven Vale by Roy Grant 11 June 2008I believe Craven Vale (termination orf the Kemp Town Railway line) got its name from the Stationmaster at Brighton Station who was in charge at the time of the Clayton Tunnel Railway crash. Re: Craven Vale by Roy Grant 11 June 2008Year of disaster 1861. Full name of Station master, John Chester Craven.
