crematorium at Saltdeen or Brighton by Arvind Raje 14 April 2005i am looking out for the location of the crematorium according to Hindu rites2 replies Re: crematorium at Saltdeen or Brighton by Ted Brooke 15 April 2005The only one I know is The Chattri, at Patcham. I would be interested to know of another. Re: crematorium at Saltdeen or Brighton by david shelton 23 April 2005The Chattri at Patcham on the Downs is the Hindu or Sikh site where the soldiers who died in WW1 of both faiths from the various hospitals around the city were burned on three ghats, whose spots are marked on the memorial by three stone or marble slabs. The religious leaders of the groups agreed that these cremations could go ahead due to the circumstances, their ashes should either be sent home to India or taken to the sea because of the tradition of using the waters of the Ganges to scatter them. If anyone would want to visit the Chattri, I believe the keys can be obtained from the youth hostel at the park by the main flyover A23/A27 and then it’s a walk across the Downs nearby.
