Does any one remember Cooks Cycles, White Cross Street, Brighton? by David Ward 13 February 2020 3:41 PMThis cycle shop was run by a very good guy Len Cook with his wife.3 replies Re: Does any one remember Cooks Cycles, White Cross Street, Brighton? by Alan Phillips 25 February 2020 10:45 AMI do not remember a Cooks Cycles in White Cross Street but there was a Cooks Cycles in Portland Road, Hove, from at least 1959 until the late 1990’s / early 2000’s. I do not know if they were part of the same company. At Christmas 1959 my parents gave me a New Hudson (sit up and beg) bike they bought from the Portland Road shop for £22 10s 0d. I still have the receipt somewhere, although the bike is long gone. Some years later both of my daughter’s bikes came from there also. Re: Does any one remember Cooks Cycles, White Cross Street, Brighton? by Alan Hobden 25 March 2020 9:42 PMYes, David, I do remember it. The property on the east side of the road was, from memory, a type of warehouse, with large doors at the front, and a smaller door set within one of them. As you walked in you were faced by a cluster of cycles for sale.I saved up my money and went there to buy a beautiful red and black Coventry Eagle touring bike from the husband and wife team for £14 in the 1960s.Regards, Alan. Re: Does any one remember Cooks Cycles, White Cross Street, Brighton? by Kirk Daly 22 April 2020 9:38 AMI worked part time at “Cooks for Cycles Ltd” (its full fancy name) in Portland Road, Hove in the 1980s for Mike Cook who owned the business with other family members. I think it was started by his dad. Keith was the other full time staff member. During my time, we sold Dawes, Bianchi and Kalkhoff bikes and did a lot of servicing. I don’t recall there being a related shop in Brighton but if there was, it was certainly shut by 1980 or hadn’t opened by late ’80s. Mike was a real individual, and a great guy.
