My Grandparents lived at number 27 George Street Brighton in 1934.I checked the house out a couple of months ago. Maralyn Re: Does this address still exist? - A Cautionary by Andy Grant 5 January 2006Val, I cannot answer your question for certain, but would believe it almost certainly still does. The numbering of houses was not immutable and many changes have occurred to individual house numbers over the years. Constant rebuilding, demolitions and infilling have resulted in constantly changing numbers in many of the streets of Brighton. I have been in contact with many individuals who have sought the abodes of particular relatives in the 19th century, with a view to visiting the house and recording it in their own personal histories. Some have travelled from afar to do this. What I am saying is be as certain as you can that you are looking at the right house before you leave with your treasured pictures. By way of practical advice on this, if you are coming to Brighton anyway, visit Brighton Museum, ESRO and the Local History Centre to research the house. There you can look at directories and Maps to follow the history of the property. A good way of doing this is to “count from the corners” or from some fixed landmark (for instance a Church, Public Building or often a Pub – although even all of these sometimes change over the years). The Trade directories can be innaccurate, but one thing they usually get right are the road junctions. For example, if you look at George Street in 1874, it is listed as being at 14, St. James’ Street running through to 161, Edward Street. The numbers ran from 1 to 35 (nearest the junction with Edward Street)on one side and 36 to 56 (The “King’s Arms”, nearest the corner of St. James’ Street) on the other. Hence we can deduce, at that time, that number 33 was near to the Edward Street end on the Western side of George Street (same side as the Alms Houses. From the corner of Edward Street, there is the “Thurlow Arms”, number 35, 34, 33, so it is third house from the end (assuming they were not sub-divided). Moving to 1911, the “King’s Arms” is still number 56, so it would appear the house numbers remained stable. I am aware that the houses on the West Side from 17 to 35 are listed as of special interest. I am also aware that the Alms Houses were demolished and new buildings erected there in the mid 1980’s. I do not know if this affected the street numbering, but it does not appear to have done so. There is a good picture and some history of George Street in 1910 at www.nealball.co.uk/Brighton/george_st.htm.So there you have it…good luck with your endeavours. To others researching an address, especially from accross the pond, I hope this has given some guidance – please don’t let your trip be a wasted one.Regards Andy Re: Does this address still exist? by alan purton 18 May 2006many happy memories of george street, i was born at number 5a above pullingers shoe shop, in 1957, lived there for 21 years. my gran lived in little george street, and two sets of aunties and uncles lived at the end, one next to jimmys the hairdressers, and the other two doors down from the thurlow. some nice characters lived in the street.
