Re: Dr Banardos by Joy 10 December 2006Hello Maralyn Yes,it would be great if you would tell me how you went about locating your relative in Banardos, any help would be most valued. I have tried looking the home up on the web but until Brian Dungate messaged I was begining to think there wasn’t a home in the Brighton area. What a wonderful site this is with so many people willing to help. Thank you. Re: Dr Banardos by Eileen 23 December 2006If it helps, boys from the Doctor Barnardo’s home attended my primary school, Stanford Road County Primary. I was there 1958-61. I remember Malcolm Bogg and Mario ? They may have info Re: Dr Banardos by Joy 3 January 2007Thank you Eileen I will try to locate that school and look into it. Re: Dr Banardos by Sarah Mchugh 17 September 2007Stanford Road Primary (as was) is now located on Stanford Road and called Stanford Junior School. BN1 5PR. It’s the same Victorian building it always was. Re: Dr Banardos by Sarah Mchugh 14 December 2009Did you see this entry on the “Trains went rattling by” page on this site?I would have been at Stanford Road in 1950/52. I was one of those Barnardo Boys Robert Whiteman mentions. We were always known as the home boys. We would run in a crocodile to school in the morning, accompanied by our house master, from the home, Furze Court, Dyke Road Avenue. Grey clothes and boots in winter and khaki and sandals in summer. I was the first boy from the home to pass the 11plus. Went on to B and H Grammar School, and then to Lewes Grammar. The sixpence provide for the mushy school lunch was just sufficient for a currant loaf at the “tuck shop.” By Roger Johnson (16/06/2008) Re: Dr Banardos by Sarah Mchugh 14 December 2009There is a photo of the home on the website. I can’t post a link but you can google “furze court” AND “dyke road avenue” and you should find it. Re: Dr Banardos by stephen marsh 22 July 2020 10:04 PMHi all, I was at Furze Court in 1957/8. We were all well looked after. We schooled at the Central Street school in Brighton. I can remember in the lower field the home had a goat called Judy. Also, each Easter, we were donated such a big chocolate egg, the staff had to place it on a sheet, throw it in the air, then we helped ourselves. The staff there were really nice, and I’m thankful. I later had a super career in the Met. Police, London. Re: Dr Banardos by Roger Johnson 25 October 2022 9:28 AMThat goat came from my grandfather’s place who had quite a number on his smallholding in Small Dole. I didn’t think it stayed around that long. I don’t really remember you Steven. I think I left around about the time you arrived.
