Eastern Rd post office by Dick Chase 16 July 2016Does anyone know if there was once a post office in Eastern Road, certainly as far back as 1918?7 replies Re: Eastern Rd post office by Geoffrey Mead 16 July 2016Kelly’s directory 1914 shows a Post Office at 232 Eastern Rd near Rock St Re: Eastern Rd post office by Tim Sargeant 16 July 2016As an aside; For a couple of nights in about 1955 we lads all sat on the wall of St Mark’s Church and watched a sequence being made for the film ‘The Gelignite Man’. (Released March 1956, IMDb) This used one of the then derelict shops to the west of Clarence Garage as the scene of the action. One of the film crew showed me how the arc lamps worked. Re: Eastern Rd post office by Tim Sargeant 16 July 2016At the Sussex Square end of Eastern Road opposite St Mark’s Church there is a petrol Station, Sussex Square Garages, previously Clarence Garage, which was number 236. Between the garage and St Marks Street there used to be a row of three or four shops. One of these would have been the Post Office you refer to as Geoffrey identifies it as No 232. I don’t remember it as a PO even though I used to go past there every day on my way to school in the 40s & 50s when we lived in Sussex Square. One was an electrical engineers I think the others were no longer in use as shops. Thinking back, there weren’t very many shops in the whole length of Eastern Road! Re: Eastern Rd post office by Tim Sargeant 16 July 2016PS: I had a Post Office Savings account and I think we used to go to a PO in Rock Street or Chesham Road for that. When I find the book I’ll have a look at the address. I think there’s still 6d in my account! Re: Eastern Rd post office by Dick Chase 19 July 2016Many thanks for this. I have been trying to make out a postmark on a George V stamp which looked a lot like Eastern Rd. I will take your info as confirmation. Many thanks again. Re: Eastern Rd post office by Dick Chase 19 July 2016Thank you for this and the other responses. I have told Geoffrey that I will accept his info as confirmation of the PO existence. All the best. Re: Eastern Rd post office by Tim Sargeant 29 August 2016232 Eastern Road is now St Mary’s Convenience Store. Presumably named after the now defunct St Mary’s Hall girls school. Whilst in town last week I took a photo if you’re interested. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
