funny named alley way by duffy 30 March 2010popes folly runs around lower hollindean road and back again,?????cmon roy tell us why4 replies Re: funny named alley way by Geoffrey Mead 30 March 2010I believe that it was simply a piece of land or houses owned by a Mr pope…but as to his folly? where is Andy when you need him! Re: funny named alley way for roy by David Ward 30 March 2010Popes Folly is on the right hand side of Hollingdean Road heading up from Lewes Road. I always thought this a strange name when as a pedestrian (pre-car) boy I would walk past Popes Folly on my way home to Hollingdean. The place is strangely located close to the Jewish cemetery which is listed by Wikipedia (that unimpeachable source of knowledge!) thus: “The only public building of historic interest in Hollingdean is small Jewish Cemetery”I find this sort of place naming fascinating particularly when the name sums up the history of the location – as in “Whipping Post Lane” in Rottingdean. Re: funny named alley way for roy by duffy 30 March 2010dont forget that i came from william street, cow dung was luxury,, the male equivalent was diffrent,?? Re: funny named alley way by Roy Grant 30 March 2010Think this is one for Andy Duffy, for my knowledge of that area focuses more on the former pumping station and the dust distructor. For example, did you know that area was once used for recycling waste from Brighton’s cess pits into plaster for use on the walls of new housing? Bet you thought it was only primitive communities that put cow dung on their walls. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
