Vegetarian and wholefood outlets are not a new thing. There were several in Brighton and Hove in the 1950s, all known as health food stores. I can remember Mr Rowe’s in Clarence Street, Brighton. There was another one in Middle Street. Before that, in the 1940s, there was one my family used on the south side of Western Road, Hove, near St John’s Church. I don’t see any stores of this kind in my 1933 directory so it would be interesting to know when the first one arrived on the scene.
