Henry Wikoff by Michael Kurtz 10 March 2010I would love to find the stone of henry Wikoff Grave # 24249 . He died in 18846 replies Re: Henry Wikoff by Andy Grant 10 March 2010Hi Michael, A death notice in the Times states he died 28th April 1884 at 39, Marine Parade, Brighton. This was listed as as a lodging house at that time. Chances are, he was interred in the extra-mural cemetery and you might wish to make enquiries to them (see website for Woodvale cemetery). Regards Andy Re: Henry Wikoff by Roy Grant 10 March 2010It would be worth buying a copy of his death certificate and then contacting one of the local cemeteries like Woodvale in Brighton. Although over 72 at his death, he was not on the 1881 UK census and the rather unusual surname suggests he was mid European, and may have had Jewish connections. If so, the local Synagogue may also be able to help you further. Re: Henry Wikoff by Andy Grant 10 March 2010Hi again Michael, Further to my earlier response, from a letter written by Anna Matilda Wikoff in 1884, she stated he suffered paralysis then bronchitis. I can also confirm that he was buried in the Extra Mural Cemetery, plot 24249, ‘on an elevated position overlooking the Royal Pavilion’. Wikoff had gone to Brighton to visit J.H. Puleston MP, who lived at 31,Sussex Square and Sir Frederick Perkins, who had a villa there. The principal mourners were Dr. Robson Roose, Sir Frederick Perkins, Sir J.H. Puleston and W.H. Thompson of the American Consulate.Regards Andy Re: Henry Wikoff by Roy Grant 10 March 2010OK, Have found he was actually Chavalier Wickoff, a noted American from Abe Lincoln’s White House who is descibed on the Internet as a rofessional gossip. Another resume of his history is more polite calling him an author, born in Philadelphia in 1813; died in Brighton, England, 2 May, 1884. His father, a physician of Philadelphia, was owner of the township of Blockley, on Schuylkill river and left a large fortune. Henry graduated at Union college in 1831, was admitted to the Philadelphia bar, and in 1834 sailed for Europe, where his career was made notable by intimacy with many of the foremost men of his time. He had the reputation of being better acquainted with important unwritten history than any other man of his day. Re: Henry Wikoff by Roy Grant 10 March 2010Assuming the 2nd May 1884 is the correct death date for this “professional gossip’ you could also check out the weekly newspapers (Gazette or Herald) for an obituary. That may tell you where to start looking for a grave. Re: Henry Wikoff by Glen Robins 10 March 2010Blimey, that must have been a high grave! I can’t think of many spots in the Extra Mural cemetery that would fit the description “on an elevated position overlooking the Royal Pavilion”. Theres a big hill in the way!
