Herbert Tennent - Prompt Corner Restaurant

by Maureen Binstead 31 July 2011

My Mother was a Kathleen Tennent born 1903 Brighton and she had an Uncle Herbert Tennent. Her father was Ernest Tennent born 1869 Washington Street, Brighton whose parents were George and Mary Georgina Tennent. George was supposedly born in Saint Helena in 1843 and on his marriage certificate his father’s name was given as Matthew Tennent whose trade was given as a bricklayer. We do not have any ofther information on him. My mother’s cousin Harry used to run the Tea Kiosk in the Pavilion Gardens for many years certainly well into the 1970’s which I believe after his death his daughter took over. I think that these Tennents could have been related. My mother’s family lived in Picton Street Brighton and then Franklin Road for many years. Is there any other Tennent living in Brighton who would have any knowledge of a Matthew Bailey Tennent who first appeared in the 1841 Brighton Census living in Weston Court and died at number 12 Lewes Road, Brighton aged 85? He was born in Yorkshire. His occupation was given as ‘Gentleman’ on all listings and at one point was noted in the London Times of December 1806 as being a bankrupt. I am having difficulty in tracing any children that he may have had or who his wife was in order to link him to my Matthew Tennent father of my Great Grandfather George Tennent and what he may have been doing in Saint Helena, South Atlantic. There are of course two other Saint Helena’s both in the Carribean.
