Hot Pie Shop by Wyn Burgess 15 July 2009Not quite a sea front attraction but not far away, who remembers the Hot Pie Shop in St James Steet. Ny favourite was the ‘Beano’ Wyn B17 replies Re: Hot Pie Shop by Jennifer Tonks nee Smith 15 July 2009OOH Wyn can smell and taste it now.It was just up towards the chemist and offy near the junction of Rock Gardens.I think there is a cafe there now.Last stop after a night out, and eaten in Queens Park.Lovely.My sister Pamela as a young girl was sent out for (I think it was two)beanos, and, much to her colleages amusement, came back with The Beano comics!! Re: Hot Pie Shop by Roy Grant 15 July 2009GCE exams for those brainy enough to take them, and those who were not, an afternoon swimming and sunbathing on Daltons Beach with a ninepenny Beano……, Bliss. Re: Hot Pie Shop by Kaz 15 July 2009Mine was the meat and potato pie,oh and the smell of them was out of this world. Re: Hot Pie Shop by Jennifer Tonks nee Smith 15 July 2009Roy was Daltons beach the one to the left of the Palace Pier? If so, that is the one we used as kids.Am I remembering correctly, there were bumper cars top of beach? Also from the beach I mention there were boat rides out.Back to Pie shop, yummy wish it was still there now. Re: Hot Pie Shop by Kevin Bushby 15 July 2009The Beano pies weren’t very big, and as a teen, I could put 2 or 3 of those away easily. I would love to get the recipe for them. Anyone have any ideas? Re: Hot Pie Shop by Les 15 July 2009The Cottage pies were good – as were the Beano pies – loved eating these walking home after a night out – There is a very good pie shop in Baker Street off London Road Re: Hot Pie Shop by Jeremy Homeward 15 July 2009Heaven.I may not make it when I meet my demise, but rarely, when I could afford it, I did so with those eight pence beano pies. The cheapest and for me, the best. Re: Hot Pie Shop by Ann 16 July 2009The “special” ingredient , i think [and i have tryed it out] is, the pastry is mixed with Mashed Potatoe instead of water, works well with savoury pies. Re: Hot Pie Shop by Jeremy Homeward 16 July 2009OOOOh Ann, do please give more detail for this pathetic kitchen poltergeist, to dabble with. Regards Re: Hot Pie Shop by Isabel 16 July 2009My favourite was the beano.I wonder why the shop closed down? There was plenty of us eating their pies.Did we switch our allegiance to Burgers? Re: Hot Pie Shop by ann 16 July 2009jeremy, re- pie recipe, when making pastry, rub flour and fat together, then add mashed potatoe,[not hot] then roll out!! Re: Hot Pie Shop by Jeremy Homeward 16 July 2009Thank you, now..where did I put that kitchen?. Ha ha. Re: Hot Pie Shop by Dave B 16 July 2009I also loved those pies. In later life I became a vegetarian – and now sometimes I look back and wonder what (meat??) was in those pies! Re: Hot Pie Shop by Iris 16 July 2009That was the question. What meat was in those pies? I remember them very well. A big treat in those days. Very tasty. Not too many years after the war and the days of really strange dishes !! Re: Hot Pie Shop by Jeremy Homeward 16 July 2009Re the pie contents;Well certainly the ‘Beanos’ contained beans, now,..whether they were ‘human beans’ (sic) or not is a thought that comes to mind, with talk of meat content.Ha ha. Re: Hot Pie Shop by Sheila Jones 16 July 2009Could not resist joining in the Pie Shop Debate, The Steak Pies were the best, and nobody cooked Sauasage Rolls like they did, and Fridays after Pay Day you bought a delicious Chocolate Eclair. Dribberling OOPS! By the way,the Pie Shop in Baker Street is a good substitute! Re: Hot Pie Shop by Ronnie 23 July 2009Yes , I do remember the Hot Pie shop in St James St and the selection of pies sold, particularly the Beano pie, one of my favourites and the meat and potato and from my memeory I believe they also sold fruit pies.
