Until 1961 it was against the law to operate a betting shop. Before that time I remember hearing of occasional raids on this kind of illegal operation in Brighton and Hove. Does anyone have any more information about them? I am wondering if they had to move around to avoid detection or if the law all the time knew where they were and simply raided them routinely every few months with court appearances and fines – something which the operators must have had to tolerate as an acceptable ongoing business loss while still making quite a bit of money for themselves.
