locomotive works by michael budge 21 July 2007is it possible to find records of the workforce in the 1860,s2 replies Re: locomotive works by Andy Grant 21 July 2007Michael, There are quite a lot of records preserved for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway company covering the years 1837 to 1925, now held at the PRO at Kew. This includes staff records. The series numbers of the records are RAIL/414/750 to 796. There is a CDROM published by the Railway Ancestors Family History Society (do a web search for their details) containing a fairly large amount of LB&SCR employees, albeit it is a very small percentage of the total number employed. However, even if an individual staff member is not mentioned, it still gives some very useful information about the company regarding surviving railway records.Regards Andy Re: locomotive works by michael budge 23 July 2007Thanks Andy My great grandfather Joseph Cook worked at Brighton Works before transfering to the Mewhaven Marine Workshops.I have just found out that in 1861 he lived in Peel Place. Close to the job I think. He was a boilermaker. At Newhaven his sons William,Joseph and Allen joined him as boilermakers. His son Charles went to sea and ended up as Commodore of the Newhaven fleet. His other son,my grandfather, John also joined him at Newhaven Works as a coppersmith. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
