May 1942 - Luftwaffe bomber crash, Patcham

Downed raider

The attached newspaper clipping appeared in “The Star” on Wednesday 13 May 1942 shows my father an army officer examining the tail wreckage of a downed Heinkel 111 on the South-downs near Brighton.

It was a pathfinder that led the raiders that bombed Norwich on the night of 8/9th May 1942.

It was shot down by a Beaufighter from 219 Squadron stationed at Tangmere. The bomber crew of 5 were killed and are buried in Brighton City Cemetery. Did they receive a military funeral and was it reported in the local press?

Any details of the action that night, the cutting of the power line and power to the area, would be gratefully received.

Thank you kindly
