Molly ,dance teacher by Trina Strowman 16 March 2008does any one remember mollys dancing school in Brighton in the sixties Ship street I think an old piano and heel toe !.21 replies Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Roy Grant 17 March 2008Would Molly have been Molly Ball? In the early 50s I recall that every year at Brighton’s musical festival, her daughter, who was a very tall girl, always used to wipe the floor with the oposition performing traditional Spanish dances. She was also expert with the clastinettes. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by maralyn eden 17 March 2008This was under the Grand Theatre,I new I had seen Molly mentioned somewhere. I recall going to The Grand several times in the early 1950s. Terry Scott (of ‘Carry On’ and ‘Terry and June’ fame) was the star. My sister was in the chorus line, with I believe, a very long-legged girl called Janet Ball. If my memory serves me well, her mother Molly Ball ran a dancing school in Brighton.By David Eldridge (25/11/2006) Re: Molly ,dance teacher by maralyn eden 17 March 2008Hi Trina I have a photo taken at the Dome with dancing teacher Molly in it,my sister and I were in a show there, that must have been early 1950s. Maralyn Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Trina Strowman 17 March 2008 Hi Maralyn I remember doing a show at the Dome with Molly in the 60s. I would love to see your photo. I remember Molly being heavily made up and very bossy am I right? Re: Molly ,dance teacher by maralyn eden 17 March 2008Hi Trina and Roy I’m not sure of Molly’s surname,i will have to ask my sister.I was about six in the battered photo I have, dressed as a chicken,my mum had to knit a sort of swim suit, then cover it with yellow crepe paper cut into feathers and a hat with a beak sewn on the front.I had really long hair at that time,my mum put it all up inside the hat,as i was dancing round,my hair all fell down.we also had another outfit which was a red and gold top, white skirt and a gold hat.I got told off by Molly, when we came through the curtains, the first girl went to the left,i was second i should have marched to the right but I followed the first girl, happy days:)Your right she did have lots of makeup on.I will send the photo in. I read a message on site, in the passed few weeks someone mentioned Molly and her daughter, can’t think who it was. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by maralyn eden 18 March 2008Hi I’m waiting to hear back from my sister on Molly’s surname. Molly Corder comes to mind,I dont know why that name sticks in my mind,as i said I was quite young. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Roy Grant 18 March 2008Yes “long legged” Janet was Molly’s daughter. I did not think Molly’s dance school was in the town centre however, I had the feeling that it was half way up Millers Road. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Trina Strowman 18 March 2008Thats right Molly Cord something yes Cordwell I think. How clever of you! Re: Molly ,dance teacher by maralyn eden 18 March 2008Hi Trina Yes I think thats right,I had a feeling it wasnt Hall.Iv’e had a busy day today so havent had time to scan the photo.email me mjeden@mjeden.fsnet.co.uk. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Sally-Ann Bennett 18 March 2008The school in Millers Road was Dodo Jaye School of Dancing. When I first went there it was just for dancing but they made it more of a stage school at some time because I remember some children were there full time for their education. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Roy Grant 19 March 2008Thanks for that Sally Ann. I stand corrected about the dance school in Millers Road, you were right, it was Dodos. I can still remember Brighton’s annual musical festivals and recall that around May in the late 1940s-1950s, children from all these dance schools like Molly Balls, Dorris Isaacs, Dodo Jayes and others, performed in front of a team of adjudicators. Also there were children from local musical academies and schools of speach and drama (nowadays I can only remember Florence Moores where I went) and each day the best performances were put together to provide an evenings entertainment at the Dome. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Sally-Ann Bennett 19 March 2008I used to enter the Music Festivals each year and also remember the school occasionally being asked to provide dancers for Tuesday Night at the Dome. Good excuse for a late night during the school week! Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Roy Grant 20 March 2008Having thought Molly Ball’s dancing school was elsewhere I have now found the correct address in a 1949 Street directory. It was 147 North Street, almost opposite Ship Street. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Roy Grant 20 March 2008Have now found Molly Ball’s dance school in a 1949 street Directory, It was at 147 North Street. (between Bond Street & King Street) Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Harry Atkins 1 April 2008my daughter Jayne Atkins was at the Molly Caulder school of dancing. Molly used to run the place single handed,, and was a good teacher, She lived with her mother on the Bates estate Lewes Road. The studio was in Black Lion Strret, and after years being there, the powers that be stopped her lease, thus ending a very valueable contribution to the children of Brighton. she was heart broken. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by maralyn eden 5 April 2008Hi Harry When was your daughter Jayne with Molly’s dancing school.I have added a photo in “whats new” taken at the dome. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Val Collier Australia 14 December 2008Hi I could not pass this by, I was a pupil of the Bertram School of dancing, I was 6(1946) when I started and 15 when I finished. This school was run by Molly Calder, a wonderful dancer. In my latter years I would earn my dancing lessons by helping with the little students.. The school was situated in Little Black Lion Street,Near the Brighton Town Hall. The front door opened onto a flight of stairs, up we would go and the studio was on the first floor. Molly’s mother would always be in attendance, rather a stout lady, also the family dog would have his own bed next to his ‘mum.’ In the corner of the studio was the pianist, at times having to play the same music over and over again. These years were so happy and I have such fond memories. The other Molly was of course Molly Ball. Re: Molly ,dance teacher by Nathalie Moore 18 June 2022 7:03 PMMy mum was at Molly Ball’s. Her name was Elsa Erb. Does anyone remember her or have any photos with her in them? Thank you x Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
