Thank you for your help.15 replies Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Alan Hobden 2 September 2008I think St Paul’s School occupies this area now, but there are one or two very short cul-de-sacs leading northwards off the top end of Church Street. Mount Zion Place may be one of them. They have just a few houses remaining Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by maralyn eden 2 September 2008Hi Kathy I think the name was Mount Zion Place, there was a compulsary purchase order for redevelopment in about 1965/70.I’m sure someone else will be able to tell you whats there now. Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by G Brown 2 September 2008Sorry to say there is only one property left in Mt Sion Place these days. It’s Number 2 and it’s called Shelleys. My family lived at No.5 for most of the 19th Century Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by maralyn eden 2 September 2008Hi Kathy Click on Places on the left hand side of this page, then click streets and click Church Steet, you will see the property that is left (no.2) Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Viv webb 2 September 2008What was his surname please Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Andy Grant 3 September 2008Hi Kathy, The recorded spelling variations of Mount Zion Place have been different during its time, often being changed to Sion. Development of the road commenced around 1800 and number 6 was a small tenement located on the western side, a short distance from Church Street. All of the properties beyond number 2 were demolished in the 1960’s and replaced by St. Paul’s School. The road now exists only as a vestigial stub, having been blocked off at that time. Regards Andy Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Kathy 4 September 2008Hi Viv – my father’s surname was Barker….my mother’s maiden name was Webb!!! Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Kathy 4 September 2008A big thank you to all of you who replied to my query. I appreciate your time Regards Kathy Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Bob Pickett 4 September 2008The top of Mount Zion Place still exists the house at the top, opposite the church is still there, this is one of the cul de sacs, the other cul de sac is what is left of New Dorset Street where I was born at number 7 in 1935 and played in Mount Zion during the war with the Eacotts and the Deaseys! Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Eric Feast 4 September 2008I had a Grandfather, Thomas {?} Feast living in Mount Zion Place about 1924. I think he died about this time, and my Grandmother moved in with her sister in the Railway Bell by the station, and helped her run the pub. Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Ian Colban 16 December 2020 8:41 AMMy Great grandmother Kate Colban (Clarke) is recorded as living at number 7 on the birth of her Daughter Nora Florence in January 1911. I believe Nora was fostered soon after birth and am unsure if the father recorded on the birth certificate as Tom Colban (husband of Kate 1903-1908 is the true father as in 1911 he was living in Portsmouth shortly before emigrating to Canada with his new wife and 3 children. Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Joe Stoner 6 June 2022 11:06 AMI have a hand coloured photograph of my grandmothers garden at 7(or 9) Mt Zion Place which she won for having the best little garden in Brighton. My father James William Evans Stoner was born there in 1907. I believe that my grandmother was married to an Evans and had three sons, that all perished in WW1, and probably lived there before my granddad James Stoner came on the scene. Are we related I wonder? Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Sue Shepherd 9 FebruaryGood opening.Currently researching family history and my husband’s Great Aunt Hilda Gertrude Gray lived at number 32 Mount Zion Place and died suddenly there in 1958.I’d love to know what the house actually looked like given most of the street was demolished in the 1960’s for redevelopment. Can anyone point me in the right direction in terms of finding any photographs or any imagery at all of the street & what it once looked like or the actual property at number 32. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Regards Sue Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Joe Stoner 10 MarchI’d upload a jpg of my grannie’s garden but 5Mb is too small to do it justice!!:( Re: Mount Sion Place Brighton by Dr Geoffrey Mead 14 days agoSue Look in the James Gray Collection on B&W images of Brighton.
