Re: name of 1980s resturant by Ann Taylor 23 November 2014Thanks for the responses. It was a french restaurant at the back and i think a delicatessen at the front, did the best moules mariniere ive ever had. Driving me mad thinking what it was called. It was next to the open greengrocers that occupied the whole corner Re: name of 1980s resturant by Roy Grant 23 November 2014Sorry I cant help. The best one in town for me was Le Grand Gosier in Hove. Recall spending many enjoyable sittings, sitting on the long benches and chatting my way through the eight courses with those next to and opposite me, and almost ignoring my partner who was doing exactly the same. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Geoffrey Mead 25 November 2014I think this may be the ‘La Parisienne’ which I recall taking a lady friend to in about 1983; it was certainly on the north side of SJS. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Bailleul Jean-Luc 29 November 2014Bonjour,I do remenber a French Restaurant in St James Street, early 80’s so called ” Chez Moi “, not far away of Top Ten shop, the landlord was Marion. Will you forgive my English. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Uly Antoniou 1 February 2021 10:34 AMI remember this restaurant extremely well. We had a weekend flat in Leopold Road and would visit the restaurant most Saturday nights back in the day. There were three integral parts to the business and two names. Ground level it was Cafe De Paris. Delicatessen as you entered on the left hand side with a relaxed cafe style restaurant at the back. Down stairs in the basement was the slightly more formal restaurant and that was called Le Parisienne. Both eateries had their own separate entrance but also interconnecting stairs at the back operating from the same kitchen. On occasional nights they’d have a singer with a guitar. Date wise early 1980’s. Both restaurants owned by a lovely English chap who’s name I have forgotten (Graham rings bells) he always wore tinted glasses and a smoker. Location wise, St James. Same side of the street as The Bulldog and a few doors up. I’m an ex Londoner now living on the South Coast and have fond memories of this particular establishment. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Arthur Black 4 June 2022 5:34 PMI worked at Le Cafe De Paris on St James St 1982/83 washing dishes. I was 17 and studying French A level at sixth form so seemed like a good idea to work there. I think the owner was called Donald Osman and there was a manager called Frank.Cant remember the name of the french chef but his Japanese wife Ami worked alongside him Re: name of 1980s resturant by Jonathan Gilhooly 8 June 2022 2:02 PMThe owner’s name was Frank. The musician who played there fairly frequently would most likely have been Miller Anderson. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Eddie Jackson 16 June 2022 3:24 PMI’m a bit late adding to the article ref Cafe de Paris & Parisienne restaurant at 38 & 40 St James St Kemp Town, Brighton . The restaurants were owned and run by the talented and extremely popular David Osman. Initially upstairs and downstairs was Cafe de Paris. Later, one restaurant became La Parisienne. Various talented chefs produced wonderful food. Frank was the excellent Manager and Annie was a girl who danced can-can style in the isles, but as the Cafe became more popular she started dancing on the tables. The customers followed! Strong tables were constructed and painted black to accommodate this phenomenon which was highly successful for many years throughout the late seventies eighties and 90’s. It became somewhat of an institution and was always very well supported. Various guitarists/singers played there including the famous Miller Anderson who was regarded as resident guitarist when he wasn’t touring with world with renowned groups. Danny Moss and sister Janis also played there as did a fellow called John….. and many other talented musicians. On some occasions customers would ask if they could entertain on the small stage and I remember you could have heard a pin drop when some very talented singers from Glyndebourne opera sang on one Sunday lunchtime. On other occasions world class acts performed there in concert including the aforementioned Miller Anderson, Paul Jones, Jose Feliciano, Chris Farlow, Long John Baldry and many others. One mustn’t forget that Frank and Carmel were both talented singers and just occasionally customers were treated to hearing them sing. There is no doubt the restaurant was “a place of its time”. A one-off, never to be repeated. David went on to run several restaurants at Golf Clubs and for the Masonic Societies. Unfortunately he recently became ill and has sadly passed on leaving many, many friends mourning his demise. RIP my friend and business partner David. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Sean Finlay 16 September 2022 9:25 AMStuart Reid played there a lot and Sally Finlay had them dancing on the tables. Frank was a great singer. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Keith Montgomerie 17 JanuaryMy wife and I are friends of Miller Anderson, we were regular visitors to the Café de Paris. What a great place, many brilliant nights and Sunday lunchtimes. Frank was a great manager Re: name of 1980s resturant by TONY FRENCH 17 JanuaryThe singer at The Cafe Paris was John Drone, complete with bowler hat. I saw him there many times. But I also saw on the night Beckham got sent off…can’t remember the date..JOSE FELICIANO in the Cafe Paris! Fantastic night! Re: name of 1980s resturant by TONY FRENCH 17 JanuaryDoes anyone remember the restaurant that was in St.George’s Street, on the south side a short walk from Fox and Sons going east? La Caperone(?). It was around in the early 1990’s. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Alan Phillips 24 JanuaryIn the 1980’s La Marinade was at 77 St George’s Road, Kemp Town. My wife and I went there a couple of times for a very pleasant dinner. Re: name of 1980s resturant by Neil Summers 24 FebruaryI worked at The Cafe from 84 to87 .. it was as has been said a legendary establishment… Pages could be written on the history of it… A joy to have worked there and proud to be a small part of its history….many a night repairing or building tables as they gave way through the course of the evening… I was a waiter in upstairs La Parisienne…. Frank is surely a legend too .. often meet people who well remember the restaurant… Re: name of 1980s resturant by Martin Best 14 NovemberHi, i just came onto this page to find out if my father, Jean Ranwez, ran a French style bakery, possibly on Baker Street…. He talked about it but family do not know if he actually did it. Then i noticed your request, French Restaurant in the same period (1980s)….. I’d be delighted to find out if Jean Ranwez worked in or supplied bread for the restaurant that you refer to.
