Brighton has always been a Town of Tolerance(alliteration) and because of this attracted and fully accepted those who chose to be less conventional.
I recall the immaculately turned out couple on bikes, sometimes a tandem, who were often seen in the town in the 1950s. They were happy with Edwardian style, her with her buttoned ankle boots, flowing white dresses and wide brimmed hat decorated with flowers, and him with his tailored suit and waistcoat of the period in grey check, highly polished patent leather half boots, white spats and smart bowler hat. They always brought a smile to my face.
