Old church at 11 Dyke Road by Hilary 24 September 2009Please does anyone know the name of the Brighton merchant who funded the building of the old Church at 11 Dyke Road?3 replies Re: Old church at 11 Dyke Road by Andy Grant 24 September 2009Hi Hilary, Number 11, Dyke Road was not a church, it was formerly the Swan Downer School. Swan Downer was a wealthy merchant who set up a charitable trust upon his death in 1816 (if you enter ‘Swan Downer’ into a search you should get lots of additional information). The building in question was built for the trust by George Somers Clarke Snr. in 1867. Regards Andy Re: Old church at 11 Dyke Road by Lottie 24 September 2009 As the photograph on this site shows, it did subsequently become a church but has also been used as a disco and club. The SD school closed in 1939 according to Tim Carder. Re: Old church at 11 Dyke Road by Hilary 7 October 2009thank you. My GGgrandfather was supposed to have built/helped fund a non conformist church of some kind in Brighton and as he at one time owned 7 Dyke Road my hopes were that that was the church in question Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
