All fishermen know this just ask one!! They are the funny looking people on the beach im the boiling sun (we wish)with thick jerseys and big wellies staring at the end of a pole stuck in the beach.I know this cos I’m one of them myself.Never catch anything except colds. Re: Palace pier (brighton pier)) by mike 22 May 2005It was built so that steamships could be caught to go to Herne bay and Southend Re: Palace pier (brighton pier)) by Andy Grant 23 May 2005The main reason for the Palace Pier was as a replacement for the Chain Pier. By the late 1880’s the Chain Pier had deteriorated considerably and was also adversely affected by competition from the West Pier. The Board of Trade laid down a precondition that the Chain Pier be demolished to the developers of the Palace Pier. However, in 1896 the Chain Pier was destroyed in a storm. The Palace Pier was completed at the start of the 20th century, albeit by that time Brighton could harly be considered as a port any longer.
