Re: Port Hall Mission 36 Exeter Street by stephanie caplen jerromes 18 June 2009Dear Peter, my mother was a stoner and I was wondering if you are of the same family. She is the daughter of Adrian Lionel Wilfred Stoner who was the son of Sydney Stoner who was the son of Adolphus & Antoinette Stoner – here is some information that Andy posted: Hi Stephanie, Adolphus was the son of George and Elizabeth Stoner and was born in Brighton in 1832. George was born in Cowfold in 1800 and I believe was part of the Stoner family who became prominent as dentists in 19th century Brighton. Initially George is shown variously as a Clock & Watchmaker and a Jeweller, a trade that Adolphus also initially followed in the 1850’s. In the 1840’s George was shown at 25, Market Street and later at 43, Mighell Street. However, George was also described as a ‘Dental Spring & Swivel Maker’. Adolphus married Antoinette Hills, daughter of Richard Hills, at St. Nicholas’s Church, Brighton on 02nd October 1860. By 1870 Adolphus was running a Tobacconist’s shop at 10, North Street Quadrant and later at 64, Queen’s Road. By the early 1880’s he is no longer shown as trading. Regards AndyI am in Brighton with my 89 year old mother doing some family research, we are here till Sunday so if you think there is a link we`d love to hear from you! kind regards, Stephanie Re: Port Hall Mission 36 Exeter Street by Barry Grimwood 13 February 2020 3:38 PMHi, I have a clock with the inscription ‘Presented to Mr S E Steer’ by the friends of Port Hall Mission, Brighton, July 31st 1898. Re: Port Hall Mission 36 Exeter Street by James Kacki 23 June 2022 9:01 AMMy name is Jim Kacki. I don’t have much to add in terms of the name of the preacher, but my family lived in the suite above Port Hall Mission in the early 1950’s (I was 10 years old at the time we left in 1957). My mother was hired to clean the mission after services and I went to Sunday school there. There was a relatively young preacher there at the time. I have fond memories of 36 Exeter Street. We paid rent to a Mrs. Marchant who lived close by on Port Hall Road. Re: Port Hall Mission 36 Exeter Street by Richard Lindfield 9 FebruaryI think my uncle, Les Lindfield, was the preacher there sometime in the 70s or 80s. He was also a culpepper.
