Princes Buildings - where? by Bob 20 January 2005Can anyone tell me where Princes Buildings are or were? They were residential and in St Nicholas Ward.6 replies Re: Princes Buildings - where? by Andy Grant 21 January 2005Bob, This is realy an educated guess, but I believe Prince’s Buildings was synonomous with Preece’s Buildings, which was a blind alley of small tenements leading off the north side of Church Street, around number 103 or so. Regards Andy Re: Princes Buildings - where? by Geoff 22 January 2005Hi Bob, Preece’s Buildings were at No.96 Cuurch Street in the 1850s, but had changed to 103 Church Street by 1864. Regards, Geoff Re: Princes Buildings - where? by Bob 23 January 2005Thanks Andy and GeoffI take it Preece’s buildings no longer exist – whereabouts would they have been in relation to present buildings/streets then I wonder? Can you recommenda any sources that might give me some idea what they were like?Bob Re: Princes Buildings - where? by Andy Grant 23 January 2005Bob, Preece’s Buildings were located in Church Street, between the junctions of Gardner Street and Regent Street. It is no longer existent, although I cannot say when it disappeared – it is not evident on my map of 1880. There are a couple of contemporary prints in Brighton Library of the Central National School from the 1830’s which just border on the area, being adjacent to Regent Street. In 1848 there was only one building (number 97) which separated Regent Street from Preece’s Buildings. Regards Andy Re: Princes Buildings - where? by Bob 23 January 2005Many thanks again AndyIn fact I discover now that I had these answers to hand in Backyard Brighton, the Queenspark Book, which has a photo of Preeces’s Buildings probably taken in the 1930s and an account by someone who lived there until being rehoused in Manor Hill in 1936 because it was to be demolished. It may even refer to the distant relatives I’d found living at No 11 in the census of 1901. Re: Princes Buildings - where? by Steve 25 January 2005Preeces building certainly existeed until after 1901 as I have relatives who lived in no’s 10 and 12 Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
