reintroduction of trams ... Lewes Rd by Nykki Irvin 17 September 2002I heard a rumour that trams were to be reintroduced along the Lewes Road – does anyone know anything about this?2 replies Re: reintroduction of trams ... Lewes Rd by Martin Nimmo 18 September 2002Was this part of the Lib-Dem (presumably on Brighton and Hove Council) initiative on the re-introduction of tramways (circa June 2002)? Even if it happens, which would not actually be this decade, the routes would not yet be determined.I do recall in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s, Michael Barratt (then leader of the Conservative Group on Brighton Council) was interested in promoting the idea of the conversion of route 49 to trolleybuses, and at around the same time there was talk of a tram route to the Station (from where?).RegardsMartin Nimmo Re: reintroduction of trams ... Lewes Rd by Martin Snow 18 September 2002There was a demonstration of the Parry People Mover (Tram) in July 1994, in New Road.See:-http://home.fastnet.co.uk/gerrycork/parrypeoplemover.htmFor some background and pictures. There has been talk of extending the Volks either along the front to the West pier or to the Station. That may be the scheme you were thinking of.What would really be useful would be if it were extended into the Marina complex, and back to being close to the Palace Pier, but then it would have to be run properly? and funded etc. Then there are the proposals for an Underground line or two, but that’s another ball game. How about reopening the Kemp Town Rail Tunnel and branch, maybe extend that to the Marina. It would need a new viaduct across the Lewes Road, demolish a supermarket or two and some empty industrial estates could go as well.Dreams!Martin Snow Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
