Ha ha. When they were at Riding School Lane, opposite the Thurlow Arms, my Brother bought a Triumph Gloria from them, and backed it after a few days, I don’t think he ever drove it. Personally, I found him ok to deal with as a parts buyer. Do you remember the car breaker who operated from a shop at the junction with Edward Street and , I think, Devonshire Place. Windows full of old horns and headlamps, dynamoes, coils and goodness knows what. He had a Heath Robinson contraption up on the wall, inside, which was a DC Charger, working off the DC Mains. Re: riding school lane Correction by Jeremy Homeward 11 February 2010Correction, I meant Devonshire Street I think. It went from Edward Street to Carlton Hill, somewhere between High Street and Dorset Street. Re: riding school lane Correction by Joan 11 February 2010Please enlighten me. Where is Riding School Lane? Maybe I’m daft but cant find it. Re: riding school lane by Tim Sargeant 11 February 2010I remember those car breakers and car dealers down Rock Place. You often couldn’t get down there because of all the cars in various states of dis-repair spread about and they weren’t very polite if you asked them to move out of the way! TCS. Re: riding school lane Correction by Jeremy Homeward 11 February 2010Hi Joan, Riding School Lane is gone now, it used to be just above High Street and Henry Street, which has also gone in the slum clearance programme. It ran North, from Edward Street, in a position roughly opposit the area between George Stree and Dorset Gardens if I remember. Re: riding school lane by Jeremy Homeward 11 February 2010Hi Duffy, I do remember, Arthur Kennard having a car breakers there, before moving up to Rock Place. His premises in R S Lane was first in on left. Re: riding school lane Correction by Joan 12 February 2010Thank you Jeremy. I have an idea now of where it was. Re: riding school lane 1849 by Roy Grant 13 February 2010Thought I would add what Edward Cresy said about the Lane in 1849, just to add a bit of local colour. He wrote: Riding School Lane has an offensive slaughterhouse at the bottom where there is a large cesspool to receive all the offal. This is reported to be 80 feet deep and never needs emptying. (great for others in the neighbourhood still using water from their wells) Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
