Rings Of Hove by Caroline Carter 18 March 2010I am trying to find out about this shop which was on Western Road near Palmeira Square – it closed around 1990.14 replies Re: Rings Of Hove by TonyV 19 March 2010I worked for John Ring from 1942 to 1950 at 29 western Road and then at his factory in queens road for a further 5 years. Anyone out there who remembers ? Re: Rings Of Hove by Pat Benham 19 March 2010Tony. My Dad worked for Rings for quite a few years after the war. You might remember him as Dink or Benny Benham. As far as I recall, John Ring married Norah Gandy who worked for him. He died many years ago but she went more recently. My Dad kept in touch with her and I have photo of him visiting her home about 8 years ago.I think she died a couple of years later. He died in 2005. Other contacts he had through Rings were Tommy Reid and Barry Funnell. Re: Rings Of Hove by Keren Hancox 19 March 2010My Grandmother and parents always shopped at Rings for soft furnishings and carpets. Partly because a friend at the church we attended worked there, his name was Harry Stone. it was a beautiful shop. Re: Rings Of Hove by Andy Grant 19 March 2010Hi Caroline, Ring’s Furniture Stores were started at 29, Western Road, Hove by Wilfrid John Ring around 1930. Prior to this the store had been Lawley’s China & Glass Stores. Regards Andy Re: Rings Of Hove by TonyV 22 March 2010Hay Pat, yes rewmember the name, I seem to recall him as a Salesman when i was up in the office, affectionally known as ‘Benny’. there was also another fellow there called Donald Hodson, along with Tomm y Reid, and Barry funnell who started up ‘Reprodux’ in Newhaven. Ah fond memories of a lost youth ! Re: Rings Of Hove by TonyV 22 March 2010Hya Keren. Yes I knew Harry Stone – worked with him for many years at the factory in Queens Road. I rcall his wife as a runner, but died very young. He then lived in fontwell Road, yes? Re: Rings Of Hove by Pat Benham 22 March 2010Yes Tony, Benny was a salesman. Around 1950 he moved to work for Maples, then on the seafront next to the Metropole Hotel. Don Hodson was a name I used to hear. Didn’t he go on to run a club in the town? Does the name Batley mean anything to you? Re: Rings Of Hove by TonyV 22 March 2010Batley was also a Salesman – lived near the busstation at Whitehawk. His wife I think made soft furnishings, cushion etc, Don Hodson was quite camp, so I’m not surprised he ran a club. I was young and innocent then ! Somewhere I think I have a photo, taken outside Queens road factory of the stafff just before going on an outing to the Isle of Wight.Cor, how long ago was that ? It must be over 60 years ! I knew the first Mrs.Ring, she got me the job with her ex-husband. Re: Rings Of Hove by Jean Bethell 30 August 2019 11:16 AMI worked for Rings in 1969 for a while. Nice little job and a great boss.
