Running Horse Public House by Jean 26 May 2005Does anyone have any info on this pub, please? The 1861 census shows it at 32 Grosvenor St., Brighton. Thanks for any help. Jean NZ4 replies Re: Running Horse Public House by Andy Grant 26 May 2005Jean, In the middle of the 19th century there were two pubs called “The Running Horse” that I am aware of. The earliest established of these was the one in King Street. The second was at 32, Upper Bedford Street. However, at 32, Grosvenor Street there were numerous records of “Beer Sellers” shown. A Richard TUDDENHAM was recorded a beer retailer (1832) in Upper Bedford Street and is later recorded at 32, Grosvenor Street (1867). A succession of other beer sellers operated from these premises and it is possible the names of pubs were somewhat “fluid” at that time (if you’ll excuse the pun!). Regards, Jean Re: Running Horse Public House by Bob 29 May 2005My mother grew up in the Running Horse, King Street in the 1920s. It was then run by John Jackson, my great grandfather who is credited with setting up Brighton and Hove Albion football club by club historian Tim Carder. According to my mother, it had a cell or cells in the basement because it had formerly been a police station.
