Re: school days by Jennifer Goddard nee Norrell 7 February 2007Judith I think it might have been Miss Samways.Miss. Bolton was my maths teacher.I still have by end of Term reports and the classes had 37 to 40 pupils each. Madame Le Sech taught French.Miss.Wholey Housecraft.I learnt Shorthand when I turned 15 but cant remember the teachers name. Also typing on the old LC Smiths and Remmingtons and Coronas. They are now museum pieces. My favourite teacher was Mrs.Ellis Barker who taught History.I remember Miss Wholley throwing my too moist scone mix at me in a temper then me picking it up off the floor adding more flour, kneading it again and continued to make them. They turned out ok She had a small fuse.I was always frightened of her. Did you go down to the Corn Exchange to the Yehudi Menhuin concert? Also went to the Festival of Britain school outing.Miss Samways and a couple of other teachers took us.I think it was in 1950? She een played a Mario Lanza record for us one day. He was the top star then. We all had to crowd around the gramaphone to listen, she would have been in big trouble if the haedmistress had heard it. Re: school days by Jerry 1 September 2007The School at Patcham was Patcham Mixed Secondary Modern and then when Margaret Hardy Girls and Fawcett Boys were closed at York Place. A new Fawcett Boys School opened at Carden Avenue Hollingbury (Patcham area), and the Patcham Secondary assumed the Margaret Hardy Mantle. Re: school days by Sue King 25 September 2007I was at Margaret Hardy 1969-1972.In 1969 Margaret Hardy was in York Place and then in 1970 it moved to Patcham to a newly built school and retained the name for a a long time. It was still called Margaret Hardy in 1972 when I left. The old building in York Place is now Brighton City College. Re: school days by Vivienne Ryan Nee Beech 2 October 2007Hi I attended Margaret Hardy when it was located in London Road and my form tutor and also my English teacher was Mrs Ellis-Barker. To my knowledge she only taught Enlgish Language and English Literature, but not History. She was also my form tutor for 1C, 2C and 3C from 1963, 64 and 65. I left in 1968. Her teaching was excellent and has stood me in very good stead. She was very strict but fair and I admired her a great deal. it is only in later years that I have come to realise just what a debt of gratuitude I owe her. I assume she must have passed on by now but I will always remember her as if it were yesterday. Re: school days by mike baumann 14 May 2009(To Judith) Well – I can’t claim to have attended Margaret Hardy School, being a member of the other s*x, but I do remember the afternoon the Brighton schools took part in Let’s Make an Opera. In those days probably only Benjamin Britten would have devised a composition that called on massed schoolchildren to learn to sing in a five-beats-to-the-bar rhythm (“Saddle your horses and set on your way”)…. Re: school days by Elizabeth Andreassen 12 July 2022 9:44 AMI am sure that Margaret Hardy moved to Patcham before 1970 since that was the year I left, after taking my o levels. Had been at new school a while then. Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
