This was during the 1950’s Re: scrase family by Mick Peirson 14 February 2007I went to school with a Patrick Scrase in the 1950s. He had an elder brother and also a sister if I remember. They lived in Coldean.RegardsMick Peirson Re: scrase family by Ann Farncombe 28 October 2007The name Scrase is avery old name in the Brighton area. Scrases married into many local families , including the Farncombes Re: scrase family by Fred 25 May 2008There was a david scrase who taught at whitehawk senior school in the late 60s and seventies, unfortunately he was discraced in the nineties i believe for abusing his position as a teacher Re: scrase family by duffy 25 January 2010i knew alan scrase dont know where he lived Re: scrase family by Sylvia Hill nee Scrase 8 January 2020 8:17 PMMy grandad, Frank Scrase lived in Brighton Road until he married in the early 1920s and moved to Station Road, where they lived until he passed away in 1968. He had many siblings. His father was a stone mason from Brighton and his mother’s family ran The Five Bells Pub in Pulborough. Are you descended from one of Frank’s siblings ? Re: scrase family by John Snelling 26 October 2020 8:13 AMI’ m fairly sure there was a David Scrase who went to school in Patcham. I read a lot of railway history and there are many pictures of steam engines by David Scrase. Re: scrase family by Phil Slater 1 June 2022 2:07 PMThis may not be the sort of information that you were looking for, but it does corroborate the information given by Fred in 2008. The name Scrase leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth in Lewes. There is publicly available information in the Times Educational Supplement of November 1988 cited in an American academic study that looked into cases of paedophilia, that a David Scrase of East Sussex had been suspended from working several times for inappropriate touching. It goes on to say that a David Scrase taught music between 1977 and 1986, in schools and presumably was employed by East Sussex County Council. It says he retired in 1986 and that would been about the time a David Scrase moved to a new house in Lewes.Sometime between 1986 and 1992, a David Scrase was found guilty on 14 charges of child related offences and was sentenced to 10-years imprisonment, presumably at Lewes Crown Court.A David Scrase lived near me and I know he gave music lessons from his home in the period starting 1986 and possibly before 1986, including to quite young children. A parent with a young child came to my house by mistake and asked if I knew where a music teacher lived. I remember seeing a David Scrase on what I presume was the day of sentencing eating an ice cream. His wife and family disappeared shortly afterwards and the house was sold. The effect on the local community was profound and at least one family with young children moved away.I know that the man’s name was Scrase because I found an online phonebook that gives the name David B Scrase, the correct address in East Sussex and his phone number. What I do remember was the distinctive name.I’m sure that this person was a one-off and no way reflects on others of the same name. I can provide a link to the academic paper if required. Re: scrase family by John Snelling 4 June 2022 9:40 AMHi, many thanks for your info on Mr Scrase. Sounds like it should have been DIScrase. If it is the same child I knew in my schooldays at Patcham , his later behaviour did not manifest itself then.Sounds like his first name initials should have been DIS! Re: scrase family by Phil Slater 4 June 2022 5:32 PMJohn Snelling,Thanks for that. It still seems unreal that this went on so close to home, literally. Although not as serious as murders like the West’s and Ian Huntley, it surprises me how little local investigation went on by the police.I would have thought that there might have been some information to be gleaned from the neighbourhood, but I am not aware of any questioning.I believe Scrase spent part of his sentence in Parkhurst IOW. It must have been awful for his immediate family. It was the arrogance of the man that came across plus an unhealthy interest in everybody else’s business. Re: scrase family by Roger Clifford-Banks 18 December 2022 10:33 AMThere were two Scrase brothers (possibly twins) at The Abbey School near East Grinstead in the 1950’s. One had suffered from Polio and had a withered arm; they were both very bright boys. Does anyone know anything about them? Re: scrase family by John Doe 8 March 2023 10:39 AMI’m not sure we should be quite so apologetic, David Scrace taught music at Whitehawk School in the early 70’s. He was convicted sometime later of abusing pupils during ‘private’ lessons and one of the girls he ‘allegedly’ abused committed suicide. I remember him as the worst kind of teacher who clearly enjoyed administering corporal punishment every chance he got. Really annoying that so many references to him have been removed from the internet Re: scrase family by Philip Slater 15 March 2023 10:09 AMYes, now you reminded me, I do remember the poor girl. Scarce was an arrogant, nosey individual right up to the point they carted him away. He carried on abusing young girls, allegedly, when he did music lessons from his home. Makes me squirm just thinking about it and it all went on in a house not far from me. Re: scrase family by Ian Scrace 9 FebruaryI have both Scrace and Scrase ancestry. My Dad grew up in the Portslade / Mile Oak area in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Regards, Ian Scrace Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
