If yes, I remember it quite well and I am sure it is, or was, very old. I have done some digging – metaphorically speaking and found some interesting items. The best, re the history are the following extracts. The first is taken from Ye Olde Sussex Pages website:Story of Hove page 3; Hove Street: “Many anecdotes have as their background the “Ship Inn.” The present building, standing on the site of an older one, was built in 1702, and was from the first the haunt of smugglers. Bull-baiting, cock-fighting, and prize-fighting were the pastimes of the people, when not engaged in their legitimate or illegal pursuits. a diarist writes: A Bull Bait at Hove, in a ring attached to the ” Ship ” Inn at the east side of Hove Street, took place on Monday, June 10th, 1810,…” The rest is rather grizzly – sorry for the pun, so I won’t print it here. One of Judy Middleton’s excellent publications has a little more:Portslade and Hove Old Memories Page 150-151 “Then Hove Street was straightened, the old Ship Inn demolished and set further back, and the road was set with wooden blocks.I am afraid I am not sure of the date of this so it might not be very helpful. There may well be more in Judy’s Encyclopaedia of Hove and Portslade – a very impressive work, published in several volumes, which I hope to purchase some time. There is a photo reproduced in the book – taken C1912 – Landlord William Lynn, with wife and daughter outside the inn. I am not sure about the rules of copyright regarding such pictures and might need permission to photocopy it for you. Also found some directory entries on another website but I cannot put the link in here:1832/William Tingle/../../../Pigots Directory ****1839/Thomas Petett/../../../Pigots Directory ****1854/Henry Walters/../../../Brighton Directory ****1859/H Walter/../../../Pigots Directory ****1866/G Strange/../../../Post Office Directory ****1878/Frederick Taylor/../../../Post Office Directory ****1890/Alfred Pointer/../../../Post Office Directory ****1899/Frederick Mattioli/../../../Post Office Directory ****1915/William E Lynn/../../../Post Office Directory ****In addition I have been working on the 1891 Hove census and copied my summary- District 10 – RG12/818 Page 11 13 Hove Street Frederick L?
