stamner park by duffy 3 April 2010was the big house in stamner park ever a private home?if so they must have been a very important family3 replies Re: stamner park by Dan 3 April 2010Stanmer Park was the seat of the Earls of Chichester, the family emblem of the Pelhams is a buckle, the story goes,if the Earl wanted the train to stop he had to hold up his Buckle. Re: stamner park by Roy Grant 3 April 2010Stanmer House dates from 1720 and was once the home of the Pelham family. But what really sticks in my mind is two unusual features and a side issue. [1] It should be symetrical either side of the front door, but isn’t. [2] It has been built inside out. The story about the latter is that the materials originally came from demolished building on another Pelham estate, but as the blocks were predominently sandstone and heavily weathered, the builder thought it prudent to put the formerly weathered faces on the inside. The side issue is that in the 1850s Lord Pelham frequently had to attend Parliament, so discretely hidden behind the trees, he had the trains on the Brighton to Lewes Line stop at Falmer. Re: stamner park by Geoffrey Mead 14 April 2010Just to add a little to Roy’s comment, the material used for the 1720s house was largely from the demolished Kenwards House at Lindfield just outside the town on the Ouse west bank. the house was part of the Stanmer estate bought by the Pelhams, the recycled material was used with new stone and thousands of bricks from 10 different brickyards, many from the area of Brighton and Hove around Bedford Sq and Western st.
