Stoner/Mowbray

by Stephanie Caplen-Jerromes 10 December 2007

My great grandfather Herbert Mowbray had a hair dressers in Air street (and his brother ran another in Queen`s street) in the early years of 1900`s. His son, William Ernest Leslie Mowbray aged 18 died after saving a comrade from drowning in 1913. He was given a full military funeral.(His name is on the St. Luke`s School War memorial mural) The family moved from 7, St. Lukes Road to preston park where my mother was born to Cissie nee Mowbray (Ellen Rosina Harriet Mowbray) now Stoner in 1920. Herbert`s children attended St. Lukes school, we have a prize she won, her brothers won some swimming competitions. Does anyone have any information, photos, anything on these families? or the STONERS – my grandfather – Adrian, lionel, Wilfred Stoner (known as Leo) son of Sydney & Emma Stoner (Sydney later married Emily Petit) Sydney`s parents were Adolphus & Antoinette Stoner and they had a jewellers in Brighton but we don`t know where. any information would be so thrilling for us as we have so little
