I am trying to find out why and how the Duke of Yorks survived in the ’60s, 70’s and 80’s (before Picturehouse bought it in 1994). Was it location, luck, the passion of various managers or all three and more? Was there a neighbourhood feeling about the place, was there a consciousness of it’s vulnerability, and a special fondness for it? were there rumours about it – eg wrestling … is that true?
