Re: The Florida Rooms by Sheila Jones 2 September 2007I only remember this area between 1959 and 1961,but us girls packed a lot in our lives in a short time, l remember Bobby Samson,a rather sugestive singer.it wasnt called the Florida then, l think it was the Casino? and above was the Winter Gardens. Re: The Florida Rooms by Ruth Mitchell 14 December 2007I certainly remember The Florida rooms in the ’60’s and saw The Small Faces and then The Who before they became so famous as to make it to the Brighton Hippodrome. When the Faces or the Who were playing there was a truce between the mods and the rockers because at that time, they played to both audiences. Re: The Florida Rooms by duffy 24 January 2010i saw screaming lord sutch at the florida, he came on stage in a coffin Re: The Florida Rooms by Colin Kennard 22 October 2019 9:38 AMI remember the Florida Rooms where The Who played. It cost 2/6 (12 pence in today’s money). It was also the first club in Brighton to stamp your hand so you could go in and out of the club, take a girl down to the beach and guess what? All the mods use to walk along Manchester Street from the Zodiac coffee bar in St James Street, the mods’ favourite hang-out . Re: The Florida Rooms by Johnny Watton 20 December 2019 7:38 AMHi Colin I wonder if I knew you. I hung out in the Zodiac, The Barn, and later the 101 in West Street. Also the Hideout above the cinema in East street and the Shoreline in Worthing? Hand stamps too. It was the time of the Swedish students in Brighton. The Florida was a great place with great performances. I saw The Who and visited the beach with girls. Often. The arch near Black Rock ? Did you know the Redsill brothers or Bob Firth ( Robert Augustus Firth ) ! Stevey Ferrone of Average White Band was a pal. Long time ago. I had a TV 175 and am still a true blue dyed in the wool mod. Later on the Starlight in Montpelier road … I hear King Gerry is still banging out the hits. Going to a go go now. John Re: The Florida Rooms by Jean Franklin-Johnson 8 December 2020 9:58 AMSaw John Mayalls Bluesbreakers there – first experience of live music. Re: The Florida Rooms by Steven Booth 4 June 2022 9:43 AMI used to visit the Florida Rooms Cad-Lac Club at weekends in 1965/6 where DJ “King Jerry” (King of The Mods) introduced me to Bluebeat music (Ska) and he always played “Al Capone” by Prince Buster, “Guns of Navarone” by the Skatalites and “Phoenix City” by Roland Alphonso. Great Tamla Motown sounds also….and I ended up buying a large imported reggae collection from Jamaica ! (Now sold). The speakers in the rooms were deafening but exciting, and the atmosphere electric. Meeting other Mods there spurred me on to buy my first Lambretta scooter, which I proudly rode along the seafront, festooned with chrome, mirrors, and “tiger tails” which one got with Esso petrol ! Happy memories…. Re: The Florida Rooms by Harry Atkins 24 February 2023 10:25 AM zoomHere is a photo of The Flames, who were a support band for the Who.
