We used to catch the 8a bus from Foredown Drive, Portslade to the West End Cafe and down onto the beach, very late 1940’s. Me in my knitted trunks with a cup hook on the end of a piece of string, fishing. It was 3d. for a tub of ice cream. Then one day, Clear the Beaches!, Clear the Beaches! as a sea mine came bobbing along. Everybody packed up and went home. I remember this black dot just drifting along. I think a Mine Sweeper was still stationed in Shoreham Harbour.
