At the pier head, between the sea-facing side of the 1893 pavilion, the two 1866 Birch kiosks and the drop to the lagoon and landing stages, stood a semi-circular area of decking, carrying a curved, ornamental weather screen (Birch again, I think). In the early C20th, this area was roofed over, the pier mast rising from the rear centre. I would be interested and grateful to know if anyone can remember, or tell me, what this significant part of the pier contained, or was used for ? Just an extension to the pavilion, or did it serve some other purpose ?
