Re: Who lived at Stanmer House? by Dawn Hornby 30 June 2006It was the Pelham family that lived there and then when Mr Pelham died it was bequeathed to the council, since a few years ago Cherrywood Investments own it and use it to have weddings,conferences, etc. a man called Mike Holland is the manager of this investment company and council tax payers money was spent on it doing it up before he owned it so therefore it is privately owned and privately run. Best 31 January 2007It was built by a Nicholas Duboi (spelling not good)built in the 1600’s, for the Pelhams, then the chichesters, various other people since then. Re: Who lived at Stanmer House? by Roy Grant 16 March 2008It was actually built elsewhere and relocated to Stamer village. There are two interesting things about it. One that it is not symetrical (unusual for that time, and even more unusually, it was rebuilt inside out. Apparently the soft sandstone of the original building was very much eroded, so they rebuilt it with the outer facing of the sandstone blocks facing inwards.
