Wish Park by Jasper Stevens 4 February 2022 12:13 PMDoes anyone know why Wish Park is so named?5 replies Re: Wish Park by Dr Geoffrey Mead 28 February 2022 9:58 AM‘Wish’ is from an Anglo-Saxon/Old English word indicating wet or marshy ground. This area was known as Wish Mead or Meadow in the early 19th century. The heavy brickearth soil here would be susceptible to water retention which may be its origin. This is in Judy Middleton’s Hove History website, which goes into more detail. Re: Wish Park by tony fines 7 June 2022 10:30 AMI believe it named after a flower with a similar name that grew in the what was then a marshy area (now hove lagoon and putting green) at the bottom of wish road Re: Wish Park by Peter Groves 7 June 2022 10:30 AMI think there was a well there, best wishes Pete! Re: Wish Park by Tony Fines 7 June 2022 10:33 AMI believe it was named after a flower with a similar sounding name that grew all around the marshy area which is now the lagoon and golf area ,I cant remember the exact name and spelling but Im pretty certain thats where it came from. Re: Wish Park by Alan Phillips 7 June 2022 10:38 AMThe park was originally known as The Marine Park, I believe. It was built on the site of an old brickworks which, I also believe, was the Marine Brickworks. It subsequently became Wish Park, presumably due to its being adjacent to Wish Road, so perhaps it would be more appropriate to ask how the road got its name.
