Ye lamposts by Pat Benham 20 October 2009Has anyone ever seen the design of the old Hove residential street lamposts in any other town? I have an idea they are unique to this area2 replies Re: Ye lamposts by Andy Grant 21 October 2009Hi Pat, In the 19th century the Borough Engineer’s dept. designed the town’s lamposts and some of the plans for these were preserved in the Borough archives. Local foundries cast many of the successful designs, so I would presume they may well have been ‘unique’ to Brighton Borough. In more recent times the Hove and Brighton Urban Conservation Project resulted in the appointment of a Board, which amongst other things undertook conservation and replacement of many of the magnificent lamp standards. A particularly noteworthy example is the turn-of-the century columns in Kingsway. Regards Andy Re: Ye lamposts by Pat Benham 21 October 2009Thanks Andy. A fund of great information as ever! That confirms my suspicion that a couple of examples of lamposts on private property I have found in the West Country were bought from redundant stock in Brighton and Hove.
