Re: Young Child Drowns by Rosalind Hersee 25 April 2010Thank you for your reply Joanne. I was wondering where you got the information from as I am after some ‘hard evidence’ rather than anecdotal. Also you refer to the family as being gypsies? Re: Young Child Drowns by joanne 25 April 2010Jane was my husbands sister, he gave me the info. about that and his Family the only record i can find for Orisa, is Orissa, which is in west africa with large gypsy communities. my husband always spoke of his gypsy connections. i have closed my research on this subject now. good luck Re: Young Child Drowns by mje 25 April 2010Hi Rosalind East Sussex Record office in Lewes hold the records,it might be worth a visit to read the official records they have. Regards Maralyn Re: Young Child Drowns by Rosalind Hersee 25 April 2010Thank you Maralyn. I will have to do that next time I visit. Would they have a written report rather than just an entry? Re: Young Child Drowns by joanne 25 April 2010I understand Jane fell into the aldrington Basin, people tried to help her, and i have been told some men tried to catch her by her long hair, but failed. the name ” ORISA” sounds familar, it may have been a gypsy name, that they gave to their house, i will look through my files and see if there is a solution to this query, good luck Re: Young Child Drowns by Rosalind Hersee 25 April 2010Thanks for that but I was wondering if there was any information out there in relation to her actual drowning and the use of the name ‘Orisa’ Re: Young Child Drowns by Rosalind Hersee 25 April 2010Hi MaralynThank you so much for this, it’s really helpful as I live quite a distance away.Kind regardsRosalind Hersee Re: Young Child Drowns by joanne 25 April 2010sorry, previous message should have read died 1915 —-guess i was having a senior moment. Re: Young Child Drowns by mje 25 April 2010Hi Rosalind You can phone or email them, tell them the cor number I wrote in my earlier message, and ask what information is included in the records they hold. The Maltings Castle Precincts Lewes BN7 1YT EnglandTel: 01273 482349 Email: archives@eastsussex.gov.uk Regards Maralyn Re: Young Child Drowns by Rosalind Hersee 25 April 2010Thanks Maralyn. That has now been entered in the National Archive but it is the only information I have even though it seems such an unusual and tragic incident. Don’t suppose you have any idea what the Orisa refers to? Re: Young Child Drowns by Rosalind Hersee 25 April 2010Thanks for that but I was hoping there might be others in the MyBrightonandHove community that could throw some light on this through official records etc. I have had some information to suggest that the family may have been Romany. I have come across the African connection but this was more to do with the African slaves and Spanish plaintation owners rather than Gypsy communities in Africa. Re: Young Child Drowns by Janet B 26 April 2010Sometimes newspapers give far more information than coroners’ reports so if you haven’t already done so, a dig into local newspapers may be worthwhile.
