Zoological Gardens by Maggie Holder 2 November 2017Does anybody know where the Brighton Zoological Gardens were ?4 replies Re: Zoological Gardens by David Blackford 2 November 2017There was a zoo of sorts I believe at Withdean stadium in the 1940s Re: Zoological Gardens by Tim Sargeant 3 November 2017Brighton Zoo at the old Withdean Stadium was about half a mile north of Preston Park station on the left off Tongdean Lane. I remember going there in the 1940s when we had friends in Carden Avenue. I think it continued in a very depleted form until early 1960s with only domestic animals on show. Somewhere on the ‘net I have seen some photos quite recently. Re: Zoological Gardens by David Blackford 5 November 2017Small World Tim – I remember two girls – Hazel and Angel who looked after ponies in the top left hand corner. I was too shy to make a close acquaintance! Re: Zoological Gardens by Andy Grant 7 November 2017Maggie, it depends on when you mean – during the 19th century or the 20th? The original zoological gardens were a part of London Zoo (Regent’s Park) and were in Ireland’s Royal Gardens north of St Peter’s Church. They were opened around 1823. The 20th century zoo location has been answered by others’ responses. Regards, Andy Add your replyHiddenAdd your title Add your wordsWould you like to add some images (optional)?
