College Boy style
Does anyone remember Saturday mornings going to get your haircut? Harry Myers shop was the ‘in’ place to go. It was halfway down West Street? On the left hand side was a little road, sorry but I cannot remember its name and Harry’s shop was there. The longest I waited was just over two hours. He certainly was the most popular barber around if you wanted to have the ‘in’ haircut. The most fashionable haircut of the time was the ‘College Boy’ style.

The last bus home
Then the other ‘must have’, was a suit made by Eric Graves who was along the end of East Street round the corner from the The Greyhound pub. My father-in-law was the manager there in the 1950s. My fondest memories though, were ‘the pictures’ on a Saturday night at the Savoy Cinema. Then over to ‘Bertincines’; maybe someone can help me with the spelling, it was at the bottom of St. James’s Street. On the right was a wonderful Italian restaurant that made the best ever ice cream and hot chocolate to die for. We rammed that lot down and then had to run like mad to catch the last 26 bus to Hollingbury.

Yes I remember well the early sixties, every other saturday morning sat in Harry Mires hairdressers waiting to have my collage cut trimmed. Listening to Saturday club on the radio. Some times you could wait up to two hours to insure you got your favourite barber. Mine was a great young guy called Jimmy. He whispered in my ear one Saturday that he was starting his own salon in Edward street, so from then on to Jimmies I went. Great Saturday mornings.
I think the barbershop you refer to was in Boyces Street, off West Street. It was 7/6d (old money) for a Tony Curtis. This was the most popular cut for your Teddy Boy.
