Armed Forces Day: Help for Heroes

Today, Sussex County Cricket Club, in association with Brighton and Hove Council, staged an event at the county cricket ground to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity. Help For Heroes is a charity that was formed in 2007 to promote and protect the health of those that have been wounded whilst serving in the Armed Forces by making grants to purchase equipment for their rehabilitation, and to make grants to other charities that assist members of the Armed Forces and their dependents.

The Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Wells and Mayoress Mrs Sally Wells attended this well supported event. Spectators were treated to a fifty overs game which saw Sussex CCC taking on the tourists from Bangladesh as they prepared for their one day international series against England. And to really make the day special, contrary to everyone’s expectations, Sussex beat Bangladesh.

Admission was free at the gate, though donations were invited for the ‘Help For Heroes’ charity with all money raised on the day going towards the worthy cause. During the interval, military vehicles paraded on the field of play. They were followed by a Cadet Parade in front of the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, Mr Peter Field. There were historical exhibitions, displays and interviews with wartime veterans.
