The Alderney Dairy

The Alderney Dairy, was at 78 Molesworth Street/adjoining Rutland Road, Hove; the location now houses an estate agent. The two gentlemen are my Grandfather and Great Grandfather, the former emigrated to New Zealand and went farming.

In the 1870s there was another Alderney Dairy in Church, Street, Hove (now Church Road). Local historian, Geoffrey Mead suggests that:

‘Alderney Dairy was a bit of a generic name. There was a dairy up in Powis Road that advertised itself having an Alderney cow in the 1860s, and another in St Georges Rd/Upper St James St with a similar advert claim about the same period.’

The Alderney was certainly a breed of dairy cattle originating from the British Channel Island of Alderney, though no longer found on the island. The pure breed is now extinct, though hybrids still exist.
