About 50 years ago, there was – famously – a piece of graffiti, roughly can sprayed onto a fishing ‘cupboard’, on the beach. It was just below the fish market, on the west side of Brighton Pier. It read: ‘I am slightly normal’. It remained there for quite a few yeas.
It seemed to sum up some of us in Brighton, at the time.
I think I am right in saying that it appeared on the cover of a record album, but I can’t remember the band or the date.

The graffiti said ‘I feel a bit normal today’ and appeared on the album cover for an album of the same name by Chris Butler.
A photograph of the graffiti appears in the Hag Photography book ‘How Things Are’ ISBN 0-9553118-0-2.
Apparently the structure that the graffiti was on was destroyed in the 1987 storm, and when it was replaced someone graffiti the new structure with ‘I still feel a bit normal’
James Emery you are correct in your information on the graffiti.
I did not know about the Chris Butler album, a fine musician. He did use another colour shot of the graffiti. Very interesting. The album is available on bandcamp and also with a free download here….

I must publish the ‘I still feel a bit normal today’ graffiti on my web site where you can find my original picture.
I am happy for the author of this post to use my picture for the article if they wish. You can find it here….
