Pride 25 years anniversary

Happy 25th anniversary!

If you were asked when the first Pride march was held in the city what year would you think it was? You may be very surprised to know that the very first Pride march was held in 1973, when the Sussex Gay Liberation Front organised a small march just seven years after the decriminalisation of homosexuality. But the reason Pride is only celebrating its 25th anniversary is that the next event was not held until nearly twenty years later in 1991.

On Saturday the city came alive with an estimated 160,000 people celebrating the event’s 25th birthday this year. Since its humble beginnings as a small march, Pride has now grown to a high profile weekend festival. Brighton and Hove Pride’s managing director, Paul Kemp said, “BrightonPride25 celebrates our shared history and recognises the trailblazers and community organisations, the brave campaigners, activists, artists, club promoters, performers and Pride-goers who have been part of shaping the Pride movement in Brighton and Hove over a quarter of a century.”
